Padres get big hits, a home run and put together successive wins for first time since Aug. 1 and 2
Blake Snell worked another six strong innings at the start, and the back end of the bullpen held off the Orioles in a 5-2 victory that had a sold out Petco Park roaring and rollicking like just a few have this season.“This is one of those games that just bring everybody up, hype everybody,” Tatis said. “You saw the momentum carrying away. ... This is definitely what we need as a team.”
Padres third baseman Manny Machado and right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. celebrate after Tatis stole home in the seventh inning. “Especially after a night where we score a lot of runs,” manager Bob Melvin said. “We have a difficult time coming back the next day and winning the game, it seems like this year. So hopefully we keep trying to put to bed some of the issues that we’ve had this year. Hopefully this is one we can check off.”
They took that lead when Xander Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth rescued them from turning in another Padres special — an inning that does not live up to its promise. After Trent Grisham walked and singles by Ha-Seong Kim and Tatis tied the game, Juan Soto popped out in foul territory and Manny Machado struck out.
But he grounded a 2-1 sinker up the middle to drive in Kim. Cronenworth followed by lining a first-pitch fastball through the middle to score Tatis.
