Asher Humphrey went surfing on the south side of the Amelia pier in Fernandina Beach on Tuesday, and it started like any other session.

I was surfing a longboard, luckily go to get on my board, instantly feel something for a second...a millisecond after snap, instantly knew it was a shark,” he told News4JAX.

He said his fight or flight response quickly kicked in. Humphrey was able to get back on his board but not before what he thinks was a bull shark came back for seconds and tried to drag him underwater. “I look behind and there was blood all in the water,” he said. “It was, it was something, you know,” he said.“I walked to the golf cart, got on it, threw the boards in the back, drove to the house, just gushing blood,” he said.“My dad was a medic in the Special Forces, so he doesn’t really believe in stitches or the doctor, he just used super glue and duct tape,” he said.

Now that the adrenaline has worn off, Asher is walking with a little bit of a limp these days but he’s getting around OK.He still wants others to know there are dangers in the ocean. “It is always something to be aware of.
