Ferguson issued the statement after the Legislature approved a package of bills and adjourned.

Gov. Bob Ferguson on Thursday called the just-concluded 2026 legislative session “historic,” saying lawmakers delivered on priorities he outlined in his State of the State address, including a new “millionaires tax,” major investments in housing, and a multi-year plan for road and bridge maintenance.

Ferguson issued the statement after the Legislature approved a package of bills and adjourned. He thanked lawmakers, legislative staff, and his administration for what he described as productive, collaborative work.I talked about history, particularly the history that we create ourselves,” Ferguson said. “Thanks to a productive and collaborative session, we are delivering on all of these priorities for the people of Washington.Millionaires tax: The Legislature adopted a tax on income above $1 million that Ferguson said will affect less than one-half of 1% of Washington households. The governor said revenue from the tax will fund expansions to the Working Families Tax Credit — extending benefits to about 460,000 additional households — provide relief for some small businesses, and pay for child care and free breakfast and lunch for all K-12 students.: Ferguson said lawmakers approved roughly $1.5 billion for maintenance and preservation of roads and bridges over the next six years, money he proposed in his budget without raising taxes. The governor noted Washington has 342 bridges that are 80 years or older and 212 bridges in poor condition. The Legislature committed more than $200 million in a supplemental budget to build and preserve affordable housing, close to the $237 million Ferguson had proposed.Five of Ferguson’s six governor-request bills passed, including legislation to give Washington the ability to set vaccine schedules and a bill, SB 5855, that prohibits law enforcement — including federal immigration agents — from wearing masks while conducting enforcement actions, a measure the governor said responds to “alarming” federal practices. Ferguson said the package of measures “returns significant dollars to working families and small business owners” and helps “fix our upside-down tax code.”There are challenges ahead, but also significant reason for optimism for the future,” Ferguson said. “In my State of the State, I said Washingtonians are not mere bystanders to history. We are bold and, with heart and spirit, we forge our destiny and make history. That’s exactly what happened this session.Ferguson said he appreciates the work of “many dedicated public servants” who made the session a success and reiterated his intent to sign the measures that reached his desk.
