A surge in feral hogs in the city of Kyle, Texas, is causing significant damage to parks and trails. Residents are reporting increased sightings of the wild pigs, raising concerns about their safety and the impact on local ecosystems.

The city of Kyle has grown concerned by an apparent increase in its population of feral hogs , with lots of damage in recent days to its parks and trails. Garrick Guth has lived in Kyle for close to 20 years. He hasn't seen a single feral hog in all of that time until now. 'It’s like they’re actually tilling it for you,' Guth said. 'At first I thought it was quite interesting, but I hear they can be pretty dangerous if they get near you.

' 'I’ve seen them across the street at the playground late at night,' Guth said. One feral hog, a female pig, can become 60 pigs in about five years,' Davis said. 'So you can do some simple math and see how very quickly that adds up.' He estimates dozens of feral hogs have been rooting through the fields looking for food, even working back towards the park's popular trails. 'They can go through a cornfield and really do a lot of damage,' Davis said. 'In the city, they can they can root up yards. They can root up ball fields...' 'One of the big problems we see here in Kyle is the pigs along our creeks, as they defecate, they end up fouling the water and creating a bacterial problem in our waterways,” Davis said. The city is bringing in trappers, who over the next couple of weeks will work to lure the pigs into a large, corral-like cage before transporting them all to a U.S. Department of Agriculture facility. 'Feral pigs are a never-ending problem, and so we try to manage that,' Davis said. 'But I do anticipate, within a month to a month and a half, I think we're going to be able to start to see less and less damage in this area.' In the meantime, Davis warns feral hogs can be aggressive, so residents and their pets should keep their distance. 'Make sure that you keep pet food indoors so that pigs can't get to that,' Davis said. 'And make sure that you keep your trash can lid secure so they can't get into the trash.' 'I wasn’t going to run up and pet them, that’s for sure,' Guth said
