Emilia Wickstead looked to the cultural pioneers shot by trailblazing photographer Gisele Freund for her SS25 collection, shown at London Fashion Week.
Emilia Wickstead can always be relied on for an art, photography or film reference that makes you whip out your phone and open Google, and so a collection preview with the New Zealand-born designer is a little like an enjoyable humanities lesson.
” An abbreviated list of some of Freund’s sitters: Frida Kahlo, the former first lady of Argentina Eva “Evita” Peron, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean Cocteau and Leonard Woolf. “Surrealists, photographers, writers… she shot them all,” Wickstead says. “They really became a gang of muses,” Wickstead goes on. The collection of portraits led the designer to embark on a character study-inspired collection, exploring not just the diversity of Freund’s subject matter but also the duality that exists within.
