A recent genetic analysis of remains from a late Iron Age cemetery in Dorset, southwest England, reveals that women were closely related, while unrelated men likely immigrated to the community after marriage. This finding, published in the journal Nature, challenges previous assumptions about social structures in prehistoric Europe.
The study, led by geneticist Lara Cassidy of Trinity College Dublin, analyzed genetic material recovered from 57 graves dating back to approximately 100 B.C. to 200 A.D. The results showed that two-thirds of the individuals were descended from a single maternal lineage, indicating a high degree of kinship among women.This pattern suggests that women remained within their existing social circles throughout their lives, maintaining strong bonds and likely inheriting or managing land and property. In contrast, men, who were typically outsiders, relied on their wives' families for resources and livelihood. This stark difference from the common pattern observed in other ancient societies, where women typically moved to their husbands' families, highlights the unique importance of female lineage and social networks in Iron Age Britain.
