Record-breaking Hurricane Beryl made landfall along the Texas coast early Monday morning as FEMA teams were on standby for support.
Residents and business owners were warned of high water in Surfside Beach, Texas. As of Monday afternoon Surfside Beach remained closed as officials made their damage assessment, according to Surfside Beach Texas Emergency Services.

The U.S. Coast Guard and FEMA had search and rescue teams in Texas when the Category 1 hurricane arrived near Matagorda County at 4 a.m. local. President Joe Biden received updates on the storm after it made landfall, according to the White House. Days before Beryl's arrival, FEMA teams with over 60 people on staff collected 800,000 liters of water, prepared 500,000 meals, collected tarps and had 60 electric generators for Texans, according to a FEMA news release. Hours later, the second named storm of the season weaken to a tropical storm as it moved further inland.As of Monday afternoon, FEMA's two Mobile Emergency Response Support vehicles prepared to support. More than 2 million homes and businesses in the Houston area were without electricity, CenterPoint Energy officials said. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has an Emergency Power Planning and Response Team to help with temporary emergency power to "critical public facilities."Use generators safely. Generators can be helpful when the power goes out. It is important to know how to use them safely to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning and other hazards. Only use them outdoors and away from windows. Keep freezers and refrigerators closed. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours and a full freezer will keep the temperature for about 48 hours. Disconnect appliances and electronics. Turn off or disconnect appliances, equipment or electronics. Power may return with momentary surges or spikes that can cause damage. Houston officials said they had performed at least 15 high-water rescues and more were ongoing. “First responders are putting their lives at risk. That’s what they’re trained for. It’s working,” Houston Mayor John Whitmire said.on Sunday in preparation for the storm. Their crews were also on standby with boats and aircraft to assist search and rescue activities. Nearly 400 Red Cross disaster responders are helping with feeding, emotional and spiritual care for storm survivors, stated FEMA.Coastal towns like Surfside Beach warned residents who were making their way back to their homes and businesses of high water. Emergency management officials stated people shouldn't walk, swim or drive through flood waters. FEMA added that residents should continue to closely monitor the path of the storm and follow instructions from local their officials.Authorities in Harris County reported that two people were killed after trees fell on their houses. One of them was a man in the Houston suburb of Humble and a woman in Harris County, according to Precinct 4 County Constable Mark Herman.Don’t drive through flood waters.Almost half of all flash flood deaths happen in vehicles. Do not walk or wade in flood waters. The water may be contaminated by oil, gasoline or raw sewage. It may also include dangerous wildlife. For flooded basements, people should never attempt to turn off power or operate circuit breakers while standing in water. Wear gloves and sturdy thick-soled shoes. Do not try to remove heavy debris alone. Avoid downed power or utility lines. Consider all downed lines live with deadly voltage. Stay away and report them immediately to the power or utility company. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is acting governor while Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is out of the country, is expected to give an update at 5 p.m. CT. Beryl is expected to moves north across parts of southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas and southern Missouri Monday night and into Tuesday, according to authorities.
