“We're about grace and compassion on this show as well as talent, and you've got all three,” Katy Perry told Indy native Cam Amen.

During a segment featuring the run-up to a duet that would determine whether the Indianapolis native would continue in the competition, there was compassion, drama, suspense and tears. Monday night’s episode showed Amen, one of only four platinum ticket holders this season, selecting as his duet partner Louisiana native J Valerione, saying he identified with Valerione’s struggles to pursue dreams of being an artist.

That was just before an overwhelmed Valerione was shown packing up and leaving before the duo starts rehearsing. Amen got a text from Valerione, who had withdrawn from the contest the day they were set to perform, and Amen had to change course. Hours later though, Valerione resurfaced, apologizing for leaving and asking to resume their partnership.
