Federal prosecutors in D.C. plan to charge parents tied to teen takeovers, drawing mixed reactions from city leaders and residents.
” a move that has drawn mixed reactions from neighborhood leaders in the Navy Yard who have been pushing for action after repeated incidents.announced Friday that her office will step in and prosecute parents, marking what she said would be the first weekend the policy is put into action.
“We’re going to charge them, and if you drop your kid off and you fail to supervise them or you let them skip school to join the chaos, you are going to face fines, court-ordered classes, and possible jail time,” Pirro said Friday. Pirro said parents could spend up to six months in jail and that the charge would be contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She said the effort is aimed at stepping in where parents would not.
“This sends a clear message to the parents that you must supervise your kids or face criminal consequences,” Pirro said. “I think it’s federal overreach,” Wilson said. “The accountability that I was talking about and really needs to happen on a local level, like we need to start investing more in our communities and our families.
” Wilson said he does not want teens coming into the neighborhood to commit crimes or cause trouble, but said conversations with teens have also highlighted problems at home.
“We don’t want the teens coming in and committing crimes and causing trouble,” Wilson said. “But also, one of the things that we found out when we talk to teens is sometimes coming out is better than what’s going on in their household. ”“Policing and putting people in jail is actually kind of how we got to where we’re at now,” Wilson said.
“There’s no one at home because they got locked up and thrown in jail. We’re not going to police our way out of this situation. ” Wilson said any approach should take into account the realities many families face, including work schedules.
“We have hard-working moms and dads,” Wilson said. “Some of these children are out there. Parents are out working. I don’t feel like they need to be punished because they’re working hard and 9 to 5 or sometimes at 4 to 12 or whatever it happens to be.
” Edward Daniel, also a neighborhood commissioner, said he supports Pirro’s focus on parental responsibility after dealing with the issue for about a year, though he believes it could be handled locally.
“I’m honestly happy with the accountability piece of this,” Daniels said. “When it comes to parental accountability, because we’ve dealt with this now for a year. ”“Her means of addressing the situation, I think that we can address this with local resources, meaning MPD,” Daniels said.
“I don’t think that we need federal resources. ”“I agree with holding parents accountable for the activity of their kids,” Daniels said.
“Especially those who have just turned a blind eye to what the kids are doing. ”The body of a missing 26-year-old was recovered at Grand Canyon National Park earlier this week.
