The federal government is earmarking more than $4.2-million to projects to make abortion services available to more people.
Around $3.8-million will go to researchers at the University of British Columbia . The researchers will work with organizations to develop training resources for health care professionals, to address barriers that underserved populations may be experiencing. The group Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights will get around $428,000 for expand its phone hotline and information hub. The aim is to make information on reproductive health more readily-available. The project will also offer financial help for people needing to travel for their abortion care.
“We know that women across Canada face barriers when accessing abortion services, such as the cost of travel, cultural stigma, and difficulties accessing accurate information,” said Marci Ien, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth. “This is why it is critical that we continue to work with organizations like Action Canada and the University of British Columbia, to make sure that underserved women have access to safe abortion services, wherever they live.
“Denying a person abortion care is denying them the right to have full control over their own body,” said Farrah Khan, executive director at Action Canada for Sexual Health and Rights. “In Canada, we have a right to choose an abortion, but not everyone has access. The Action Canada Access Line gives people the information and support they need to get an abortion, no matter how far they have to travel or what’s in their bank account.
