A FedEx Boeing 767-3S2F experienced a bird strike during takeoff from Newark Airport, resulting in flames on one wing. The crew declared an emergency and safely returned to the airport. No injuries were reported.
A FedEx cargo plane was observed flying with flames on one wing near Newark Airport in New Jersey on Saturday morning. Multiple videos circulating on social media depicted the Boeing 767-3S2F aircraft with visible flames on one of its wings. A spokesperson for FedEx confirmed to FOX Television Stations in an email that the flight had encountered a bird strike during takeoff. 'Our crew declared an emergency and returned safely to Newark,' the statement read.
'We are thankful for the quick actions of our crew and first responders.' Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. The flight was originally scheduled to travel to Indianapolis. This incident comes amid growing public concern about aviation safety following a series of recent high-profile accidents and near-misses. A midair collision near Washington D.C. in January resulted in the tragic loss of 67 lives, marking the most severe aviation disaster in recent memory. Other incidents include a plane crash and subsequent flip upon landing in Toronto, a fiery plane crash in Philadelphia, a fatal crash in Alaska that claimed 10 lives, and a collision between two small planes in Arizona. Adding to the unease, there was a harrowing incident this week in Chicago where a Southwest Airlines flight had to abort its landing to avoid colliding with another plane crossing the runway. President Donald Trump further fueled these concerns in January by attributing the midair collision in Washington D.C. to an 'obsolete' air traffic control system used by airports, promising to replace it. Despite these recent events, the safety record of U.S. airlines remains remarkably good. Fatal crashes receive exceptional attention partly due to their rarity. The National Safety Council estimates that Americans have a 1-in-93 chance of dying in a motor vehicle crash, while the odds of dying in a plane crash are too low to calculate. Statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation paint a similar picture
