Prosecutors say that William “Rick” Singer, 58, ran the scheme through his Newport Beach, California, company, Edge College & Career Network. His clients included business executives, a fashion designer, a top lawyer and Hollywood actresses Felicity Huffman, best known for her role on the TV showAuthorities say the scheme started in 2011.
In one scenario describing the athletic recruitment scheme, the affidavit says Singer accepted more than $500,000 from a client. In exchange, Singer arranged for the client’s child, who did not play competitive tennis, to be recruited to the tennis team at the University of Texas. Through a third party, Singer arranged a payment of $25,000 to the University of Texas’ athletic department from Singer’s charitable foundation. The client’s child was admitted to the school as a tennis recruit.
