After findings from the Department of Justice, Madison County schools must work on alleged discrimination of Black students and Black teachers in, among other areas:“It is long past time to deliver on the promises of Brown v. Board of Education for our nation’s students,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Civil Rights Division, which oversees and is party to school desegregation cases nationwide.
The district hired a director of equity and innovation, Dr. Rachel Ballard, in 2018 who is responsible for facilitating and monitoring the implementation and action under the order. In a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Ballard said the district has been working in recent years to address some of the concerns the order addresses.
A Desegregation Advisory Committee chosen from a cross-section of the community must be formed by Sept. 15 and will be required to meet publicly at least twice a year to review data and discuss progress under the terms of the order.
