The new program will be managed by the Department of the Interior, which is tasked with submitting a detailed report within 180 days outlining specific plans, success metrics, required investment, and a timeline for restoration. Potential projects include invasive species removal, meadow restoration, vegetation management, drainage improvements, and measures to mitigate toxic dust from the exposed lake bed. A new Interior Department position will be created to oversee near-term conservation efforts, primarily focused on increasing water inflows to the lake.
Maloy is working on precise language to direct agency use of funds and will include planning and coordination requirements to guide future decisions. Governor Spencer Cox praised the initial investment and President Trump's commitment, which helped elevate the issue nationally, but stressed that protecting the lake will require sustained effort over many years.
