A San Antonio biology professor could receive $1 million in federal funding to study pathogens and microbes in the city’s water and wastewater, a project that could provide new information about public health and potential threats. Davida Smyth , an associate professor in Texas A& M University -San Antonio’s department of natural sciences, is already working alongside students to study and monitor COVID-19 levels in wastewater, through a partnership with the San Antonio River Authority .

Texas State research turns sewage to drinking water in San Marcos The funding awaits final approval from the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. The funding was included in an $11.7 million package for projects in San Antonio that was approved this month by the House Appropriations Committee. “We’re waiting with bated breath,” Smyth said. The goal is to build a robust infrastructure for surveillance that would last beyond the initial funding.

Creating ‘flocculation’: The amazing way wastewater gets cleaned She pointed to MRSA, a type of staph infection that can go undiagnosed as it spreads in a community, as an example. Wastewater data can provide information about the level of community spread and transmission, Smyth said. If approved, the additional funding will also help bolster a partnership with the Edwards Aquifer Authority to monitor contaminants in the city’s largest drinking water source.
