The polls have closed in the federal by-election of Dunkley , with both major parties running candidates. There were 113,517 eligible voters at the close of the rolls and roughly 45 per cent of the vote was cast before polling day on Saturday. Located in the outer suburbs of the city's south-east, the "safe" Labor seat has a 6.3 per cent margin. But on Friday, ABC chief election analyst Antony Green said that was not necessarily an indication of results.
"It's only on a 6 per cent margin because Labor is so dominant in Victoria the Liberal Party has done very poorly there for a long time," he said. "If Victoria was more of a 50-50 state, Dunkley would be that seat right on the dividing line between the two sides of the political ledger." Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spent his 61st birthday gearing up for the Dunkley by-election and there was only one thing on his wish list this year. "What I want for my birthday is obvious today, which is a win for Jodie Belyea," the Labor leader said
