Tribal and environmental opponents say federal agencies understated the impacts of what would be one of the world’s biggest gold mines.

Geologist Peter Christoffersen and mine workers Justin Andrew and Gregory Larson sort through core samples at Donlin Gold mine on Aug. 11, 2022. The mine site is still being explored. Mine opponents are challenging some key authorizations that would allow full development.

A major flaw in the environmental impact statement process that led to the approvals, the plaintiffs argue in their lawsuit, is the lack of analysis of a spill of mining waste from a catastrophic dam failure. The environmental analysis conceded that there is a 2% chance of a dam failure causing a catastrophic spill, said Maile Sinn Fong Tavepholjalern, an Earthjustice attorney representing the six tribal governments that are plaintiffs in the case.

“These areas are serious. They go to the heart of the Y-K Delta and the core of our clients’ concerns for their health and wellbeing, not just for themselves, but for the future generations,” Tavepholjalern said. Bethel resident Bev Hoffman, a Pebble opponent, participates in a rally on Oct. 19, 2023, against the Donlin Gold mine and other resource-extraction projects. Hoffman is a longtime community activist and Yup’ik leader who opposes the mine. The protest was held on the street outside Anchorage’s Dena’ina Civic and Convention Center, where the Alaska Federation of Natives annual convention was underway.
