Routh is expected to return to court on Monday for a bond hearing.
However, Gov. Ron DeSantis let slip what could be an important clue during Tuesday's press conference.
In discussing a new state investigation, Gov. DeSantis suggested Ryan Routh's, the suspected gunman, vehicle may be tied to Broward County, which is south of West Palm Beach.In terms of the federal investigation, a local federal criminal defense attorney laid out what Routh can expect in the coming days and weeks, including possible terrorism charges.
In a federal complaint, prosecutors levied two charges against him: possessing a firearm despite a prior felony conviction and possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number. “He really has not been charged, he’s been arrested and detained on a complaint. A complaint is not a charging document that has gone through the grand jury process and that’s very important,” said David Tarras, a federal criminal defense attorney.The problem he suspects may come from the allegation that this was an ‘apparent assassination attempt.”“The subject, who did not have a line of sight to the former president fled the scene. He did not fire or get off any shots at our agent,” said U.S.
He pointed out it’s a federal offense to attempt or conspire to kill or kidnap a federal government employee –“The subject had an active online presence, and we are going through what he posted and any searches he conducted online,” said Jeffrey Veltri, special agent in charge of the FBI Miami Field Office.The week after that, he’s expected back in court for his initial arraignment.
