Federal Reserve nominee Lisa Cook moved a step closer to being confirmed as a governor on Tuesday when the Senate voted to end debate on her nomination.
Cook would be the first Black woman to serve at the nation’s central bank. The Senate voted 50-49 to move to a final confirmation vote, which is expected later Tuesday.Cook’s term would expire in 2024.
No Republicans are supporting Cook so Democrats have had to wait until all 50 Democratic senators were healthy and able to vote. Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to cast the tie-breaking vote. An earlier vote to end the debate last month failed as many Democrats were absent due to COVID. The GOP is smarting after two of President Donald Trump’s nominees for the Fed were rejected by the Senate.
