February is Black History Month and one way to celebrate is reading Black authors.

Dothan Houston County Library System Director Chris Warren stopped by to talk February's Chapter Chat pick.DOTHAN, Ala. - February is Black History Month and one way to celebrate is reading Black authors.

Director of the Dothan Houston County Library System, Chris Warren, brought an award-winning book to read to mark the occasion.“This is a very unique and very special book because it’s actually a memoir in verse,” Warren explained. These poems tell the story of Woodson’s childhood, growing up in South Carolina and New York in the 1960s and 1970s. “All of her experiences with her faith, her family, her friends are all set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement,” Warren said.Warren explained that Woodson writes that she wasn’t good in school but discovered she was a great storyteller. That storytelling serves a means of reflection. “Through the book, she finds that memory can be a great tool for thinking about how we grow, thinking about our past experiences and how they’ve made us who we are and even empowering us to make different choices throughout our life as we grow up,” Warren said.Copies of this book are available at the Dothan Houston County Library. Anyone who lives, works, attends school, or owns property in Houston County can sign up for a free library card.
