Thieves recently removed the recently installed new Parma flamingo at the southeast corner of the Broadview Road and Rockside Road intersection. PARMA , Ohio -- Roughly a month after a flamingo statue was added to the southeast corner of the Broadview Road and Rockside Road intersection, thieves over the weekend removed the iconic 7-foot-tall flamingo statue that acts as the unofficial mascot of Parma .
“Saturday morning was frustrating and disheartening as I learned of the theft and destruction of Parma’s second flamingo sculpture -- recently installed and generously donated by the Vasko family in honor of their autistic granddaughter,” Parma Mayor Tim DeGeeter said. “Like so many in our community, I’m outraged. This act of vandalism not only damaged public art but disrespected a heartfelt gesture meant to bring joy and awareness.”“I was actually working Saturday, so I went over to view surveillance footage from Arby’s, which didn’t have anything,” he said. “We do have some other business around there that we’re going to be checking out. Obviously, we’ll get some tips from the public that will help us as well.”“To the individuals behind this, turn yourselves in,” he said. “Police and private cameras are everywhere. You will be caught, and your failure to accept responsibility will only make matters worse. “Parma takes pride in our public spaces and the kindness of families like the Vaskos. We will not tolerate actions that tear at the fabric of our community.” There’s a new Parma flamingo at the southeast corner of the Broadview Road and Rockside Road intersection. A sign of Parma pride for more than a half-century, the pink flamingo dates back to iconic Channel 8 late-night television character Ghoulardi , who often referenced the plastic lawn displays when making fun of the city.In May of 2025, a flamingo statue theft from Anthony Zielinski Park resulted in three Parma men pleading guilty. Each were sentenced to 10-day jail sentences, three years of probation, 500 hours of community service and required full restitution to the city of Parma. In addition, Judge O’Donnell mandated that each defendant provide a written apology to both Parma and Robert Funk, who provided the funds for the construction of the flamingo statue to honor his wife and daughter -- both of whom died of breast cancer.“I look at this as a slap in the face of all the hard-working citizens of Parma,” he said. “This is a symbol of our community. I grew up here. Flamingos have always been a cultural symbol, something that we cherish. “We will expand every resource to identify, locate, arrest and prosecute the individuals who did this. I promise you that.” If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.and agree that your clicks, interactions, and personal information may be collected, recorded, and/or stored by us and social media and other third-party partners in accordance with our
