Australia’s soaring number of family pets in capital cities has farmers worried they are going to lose vets who can do specialised tasks, like catching bull semen in a cup.

It’s bull-sale season in Guyra and rookie vet Isaac Graham has spent much of the past week sitting next to 1000-kilogram beasts trying to catch their semen in a cup.Isaac Graham carries out bull fertility testing in Guyra ahead of the spring sale season.

A COVID-inspired pet boom saw Australia’s pet dog population jump by almost 1.3 million between 2019 and 2022, and cats by almost 1.6 million. “We are sucking vets into the cities,” he says. “They were pulled back in because of career development, or burnout from the after-hours [work]. He says vets in rural areas are more likely to suffer exhaustion because they have fewer colleagues to share the load, and it’s hard to run a sustainable large-animal practice because many farmers only call the vet in an emergency and are unwilling to pay for routine, preventative care – services once paid for by government as a public good. They also have to carry the cost of caring for injured wildlife and strays.

“I don’t dwell on things too much, but when a client is emotional, especially around old dogs and euthanasia – if it’s something I can’t fix and the owner wants you to have a go – it can be hard.”
