A park frequented by Melbourne’s Jewish community in the city’s south-east became the scene of anti-Israel vandalism after the slogan ‘Love Judaism, hate zionism’ was graffitied around the park.

A park in Melbourne’s east frequented by the local Jewish community was vandalised with an anti- Israel slogan deemed “a direct assault on the Jewish community” by a local leader.

Dr Abramovich decried the graffiti as the Australian Jewish community faces higher rates of antisemitism. Picture: Supplied“Imagine the anguish a Holocaust survivor walking with his grandchildren in the park would have felt confronted with this crime, which they probably thought they would never see in their lifetime,” Dr Abramovich said.

“This revolting graffiti, which tries and hide the fact that anti-Zionism is pure antisemitism and is a call for the destruction of Israel, is a direct assault on the Jewish community,” he said.“We trust that those who carried out this outrage are identified and brought to justice. We have all had enough of this menace.”

“It seems that everywhere we turn, we are confronted with this monster of hate, and this category-five hurricane of extremism is spiralling out of control and will remind many of a dark time in history when the Jewish community was singled out for abuse and vilification,” he said. "The lack of action by the government allows this behaviour to continue unabated and gives courage to the cowards who paste these hateful slogans," they said. The vandalism was condemned by Glen Eira City Council Chief Executive Officer Rebecca McKenzie who decried the vandalism as hateful.“Council takes a zero tolerance approach to any signage or graffiti that is antisemitic, racist, or incites hatred and this includes stickers," she said.
