The firm’s Chinese owner Jingye is reported to be considering cutting up to 1,200 roles mainly at its Lincolnshire steelworks
Hundreds of jobs could be axed at the British Steel plant in Scunthorpe as ministers consider a mult-imillion-pound rescue package for the business.
Ministers had reportedly demanded that the companies involved – British Steel and Tata Steel, which operates the Port Talbot works in Wales – protect jobs if they want government help., called the job cuts reports “dangerous” and urged the company to “urgently clarify” its position. “The Government has also got to sort out the total lack of any industrial strategy in his country, including the massive use of imported steel in our own infrastructure projects. At the moment steel workers are suffering from a catastrophic failure in leadership from both the Jingye Group, who own British Steel, and by the Government.”
