Grieving parents to one of the babies killed by Lucy Letby fear the former boss at the hospital where she worked was handed a 'get out of jail free card' after retiring to the South of France with a £1.8million pension

After the former boss at the killer nurse Lucy Letby’s hospital retired to the South of France with a £1.8million pension, the parents of one of the murdered babies says he has “a get out of jail free card”.

Last weekend, The Mirror revealed the former chief executive of the hospital at the time of Letby’s killing had also walked away from the NHS, retiring earlier this year with a £1.5million pension. Mr Harvey now lives with his wife more than 800 miles from the hospital in a farmhouse in the Dordogne boasting a swimming pool and stables.

Downing Street has been under pressure to upgrade the inquiry to statutory status, so witnesses have to give evidence. On Friday, PM Rishi Sunak said “whatever form it takes”, it is “important it is judge-led”. One witness will be the hospital’s then chief executive Tony Chambers, who has been accused of shutting down concerns about Letby. He quit in September 2018 after her arrest but went on to interim roles at other trusts.

A second whistleblower, Dr Jayram Ravi, said on Friday: “There’s an email trail. [Mr Harvey] knew by February 2016 and sat on his hands. He was instrumental in early 2017 in trying to get [Letby] back to work. Instead of making excuses, he should own his errors, as should his colleagues”.
