I had been convinced to go on a girls’ weekend to Ibiza by four mates. I could think of nothing worse. I loved my mates, but hated clubbing. Of course, I said yes, and had a G&T before we’d even taken off. Our first night was meticulously planned by my mate Denise: dinner, drinks, a club, more drinks, another club, a table by the DJ etc... Oh, God– horrendous! A schedule of dance-music-laden debauchery until the early hours. Little did I know that plan would go completely off-piste, and change my life for ever.The first pit stop on our magical mystery tour ofIbiza’s cocktail menus was a restaurant with a small club on the side.
We shook hands – which looking back is slightly odd – and the world around me slowed down. By this point, my mates were wonderfully intoxicated and ready to hit the dancefloor. We moved to the club, where the marathon-style schedule got ditched entirely, which allowed Jesse and I to get to know each other.We spoke for seven hours, while friends danced nearby on sofas with luminous curly wigs on. The whole scene was utterly ridiculous, but perfectly magical.
I felt the heat of Ibiza’s sticky night sky, the slow motion of the moment spurred on by one too many espresso martinis, the nervousness that lingered in the air between my face and Jesse’s, the drunken grins all around.will be etched on my heart for ever.
