Fear the Walking Dead used to be a much better show, and it killed off what made it so good last year.
, which some people have already seen via AMC Premiere, while everyone else will watch tonight. I saw it several weeks ago via screeners, and though it’s probably my favorite episode of the first four, I keep being reminded of how much I used to genuinely love this show, and how it lost that magic in the last two seasons, including this one.was an interesting spin on the original show because we were following a family that was practically the villains of their own series.
This came to a head in season 3 when as soon as they were taken in by a new community, Madison was already making plans about how to take over in case things went south. Things did, and sure enough, the compound’s leadership family all ended up dead, and Madison and her kids survived.
It isn’t just Morgan, though he is driving this overall movement. Last week we saw Strand try to prove to Daniel he’s not the sneaky liar he used to be, except that sneaky liar Strand was when he was at his most interesting.
That’s all over now. Madison and Nick are dead. Morgan is steering this ship and Alicia is taking a backseat when she should be the one driving. The entire mission and philosophy of the show has changed, and while it may be more “uplifting,” it is far less engaging than it was at its peak in season 3. Going from season 3 to season 4 is such a huge change for all the characters that you almost get whiplash if you go back and watch it.
Now, all the morally murky characters have been redeemed, from Alicia to June to Strand, paragons of goodness are in charge, Morgan and John, and the show is just not all that interesting anymore. I’ll still watch it, being pot-committed this late in the game, but man, they really forgot what made this show something I used to recommend to everyone I could.
