Matt Gardner is a British writer who focuses on indie games, and compiles end-of-year lists of the very best independent releases. He is a judge for BAFTA, Gamescom, and the Indie Cup.

Spooky season is upon us and, unsurprisingly, so are the year’s inevitable crop of hair-raising indie games. Chief among these isThe duo might be one of the more peculiar pairings on the indie dev scene, but they clearly work together very well.isn’t just a fantastic option for Halloween –it’s among the finest and most memorable indie horror games of the last few years, even in the face of strong competition., it mimics tropes from classic horror movies and PS1 and PS2-era games.

You assume the role of Vivian Singh, a bookish and timid girl with asthma, eyes hidden behind huge glasses, who joins her friend Amy Tanaka–your classic lockpicking, signature-forging goth girl–to have a spine-chilling evening with a ouija board in the school library. Decades earlier, in 1991, the school suffered a fire that killed 24 kids. Sad, sure, but things will be fine, right?

Of course not–you both open a portal to the unknown, getting separated, and you, as Vivian, find yourself in a-style Otherworld take on the school–one that’s falling apart, and apparently tied into the tragedy of the early 90s.

Still, you get used to these sections; based on room layouts, you can often anticipate his arrival, allowing you to enjoy the impressive variety of puzzles. They’re relatively easy to solve, especially by poking around and experimenting; a fuse box quandary is probably the most confusing in the game, but you’ll eventually figure it out. A particular high point comes when a puzzle combines with The Spotlight, and you have to balance progression with careful timing.
