NRL: Matty Johns and Cooper Cronk break down what they believe will be the game plans ahead of Game 1 of State of Origin.
No Tino Fa’asuamaleaui. No Tom Flegler . No Jai Arrow . No Tom Gilbert . To say the Queensland Maroons enter the 2024 State of Origin series light on middle forwards would be a massive understatement .
Watch every game of every round this NRL Telstra Premiership Season LIVE with no ad-breaks during play on Kayo. New to Kayo?, former Newcastle Knight Alex McKinnon shared his belief Maguire’s side, stacked with big, powerful forwards on the bench, means the Blues coach has “got a plan to bash Queensland through the middle and target Queensland’s big outs in Tom Flegler, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Tom Gilbert.
“Not too many players play in the front row that I feel like have the keys to success in their football team. I think it’s Payne Haas in this football team for me,” Cronk explained. Statistically speaking, the pair have had each other’s measure in those encounters. Across those three matches, Tino averaged 16 runs, 155.6 metres and 27 tackles, and Haas averaged 16 runs, 155 metres and 26 tackles. Not much separates the pair.
In 2023, Cotter played every single minute of Origin, while Carrigan played no less than 55 minutes across the three match series. Alongside Haas, Maguire has selected Isaah Yeo, Cameron McInnes, Jake Trbojevic and Spencer Leniu as his middle forward options, with Haumole Olakau’atu and Hudson Young filling out the bench. Nominally edge forwards, both Olakau’atu and Young are likely to be deployed in the middle of the park at some stage on Wednesday night.
