The rugby league Immortal has spoken about his diagnosis and called on the government to invest more in research into the neurodegenerative condition.

Rugby league immortal Wally Lewis has pleaded with the Australian Government to invest more funding into chronic traumatic encephalopathy research and support programs, on the same day, addressed the National Press Club in Canberra on Tuesday to share his experience of living with the neurodegenerative condition, saying he didn’t want anyone to live with the “fear and anxiety” that he experiences every day.

“I have a platform, and I intend to use it at every opportunity to bring about change for all Australians, just like me, who are impacted by CTE, and to do whatever I can to protect the brains of Australian children from CTE.”from AFL this month at just 24 after he had struggled to overcome headaches, migraines and anxiety brought on by concussions.

“And be worried about what I’ve forgotten, not even knowing what it is that I’ve forgotten. The fear of what my future will look like, and living with the constant fear and anxiety that I’m certainly just about to let people down. The people who, all my life, have been able to rely on me and look to me for my strength and leadership.”Lewis, who played 441 senior games and captained both Australia and Queensland, said he had lost the confidence that he took onto the field throughout his career.

Lewis said he had often driven to work before realising he didn’t know where he was going, and would sometimes forget conversations he had just had. Now, he carries a diary as a “gentle reminder of what I need to do.”
