The FDA warns of potential norovirus contamination in oysters from British Columbia and advises against consumption.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning on Wednesday, advising stores and restaurants nationwide not to sell or serve oysters from British Columbia, Canada, due to potential contamination with the norovirus. The affected oysters were sold in numerous states, including Illinois, Arizona, California, Colorado, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania.

Sold under the brands Fanny Bay, Buckley Bay, and Royal Miyagi, these oysters were harvested between December 1st and December 9th from specific growing areas in British Columbia. Symptoms of norovirus infection include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, and fever. The FDA urges restaurants and retailers possessing these oysters to discard them or return them to their distributors for destruction. The agency also emphasized the general risk of pathogens in shellfish and stressed the importance of preventing cross-contamination during food processing
