The FDA has announced new rules raising the minimum age for certain tobacco sales restrictions, further strengthening efforts to prevent underage access to tobacco products. These changes, effective September 30, 2024, build on the 2019 legislation that increased the federal minimum age for purchasing tobacco products from 18 to 21.

In a continued effort to curb youth tobacco use, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has introduced a new rule aimed at strengthening age verification requirements for tobacco product sales. This latest action, announced in an Aug. 29 press release, builds on the 2019 legislation that raised the federal minimum age for purchasing tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, from 18 to 21 years.

, director of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, "Today’s rule is another key step toward protecting our nation’s youth from the health risks of tobacco products."The impact of early tobacco use is well-documented, with more than 95% of U.S. adults who smoke daily having smoked their first cigarette by the age of 21.
