The guidance comes as at least four people have tested positive for the virus without a known origin.
The Food and Drug Administration on Saturday morning laid out how academic labs can use in-house coronavirus tests in hopes of expanding the health care system’s ability to detect the virus.
“We believe this policy strikes the right balance during this public health emergency,” FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn said in a statement. Under the FDA's new testing policy, labs that develop validated tests for coronavirus will be able to use them right away, before the agency reviews them.
