The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall for Daily Veggies enoki mushrooms due to potential contamination with listeria, a bacteria that can cause serious health complications. The recall was initiated after the product was found to be contaminated with listeria during lab analysis. Consumers are urged to discard or return the affected product for a full refund.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I recall, its highest risk warning, on January 14th, related to a nationwide mushroom recall. The recall was initiated after listeria was detected in samples of the product. Class I recalls signify a situation where there's a reasonable probability that using or being exposed to a contaminated product could lead to serious health consequences or even death.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeriosis, the illness caused by listeria, is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the United States. It's estimated to be responsible for 260 deaths annually. Young children, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems are particularly vulnerable.New York-based New Age International Inc. recalled its Daily Veggies enoki mushrooms after lab analysis conducted by the Maryland Department of Health revealed listeria contamination. The affected products were sold nationwide in 200g (7oz) clear plastic packages with the product code '8809159458890' on the back. According to a New Age International company announcement, all remaining products have been destroyed. As of Monday, no illnesses have been reported in connection with the product, according to the FDA. New Age International declined to comment to Newsweek.Enoki mushrooms are a type of edible fungus commonly used in East Asian cuisines. They are recognized for their delicate appearance, long, thin white stems, and small, button-like caps. While healthy individuals might experience short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, listeria infection can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths during pregnancy. In March 2020, a listeria outbreak linked to contaminated enoki mushrooms resulted in four fatalities. More recently, a recall was issued in November concerning Taiwan enoki mushrooms distributed in West Virginia.Customers who purchased 200g packages of Daily Veggies Enoki Mushrooms between October and November 2024 are advised to immediately discard the product or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, as stated in an announcement. Consumers with inquiries can contact New Age International at 718-808-1018.
