Opposition to the booster shot was highest among Republicans:
the CDC “may need to update our definition of fully vaccinated in the future” once boosters are more widespread. That could have practical implications when it comes to vaccine mandates, potentially leaving those with only two vaccine doses unable to enter vaccinated-only places or out of compliance with employer vaccine mandates.
The FDA and CDC initially only authorized Pfizer and Moderna’s booster shots for adults over age 65 and those who are at higher risk of Covid-19 exposure or severe illness, rather than for all adults, despiteshowing the vaccines wane in effectiveness over time. The extra shots have been viewed as increasingly important in recent weeks in light of a recent nationwide rise in Covid-19 cases and fears cases will surge this winter as more people head indoors and gather for the holidays.
