The COVID-19 vaccine is the first to be authorized for kids under age 16 in the U.S.
This significant change will allow younger students to return to in-person school more safely in the fall.
About 1.5 million children age 11 to 17 have had reported cases of COVID-19, per the FDA. Children generally have “milder” cases than adults. In a late March news release, Pfizer said that its study of the vaccine’s use in participants 12 to 15 years old found that it was safe andThe company has begun trials to test the vaccine, which is administered in two doses three weeks apart, with children under age 11.
“It is very important to enable them to get back to everyday school life and to meet friends and family while protecting them and their loved ones,” Ugur Sahin, CEO of BioNTech, said in the release.
