The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is hopeful that a newly approved non-opioid pain medication could help save lives. 'Eighty million people suffer from acute pain, whether from surgery, trauma, or other injuries, and the current mainstream treatment is opioids,' said Dr. Cheng. It's called Suzetrigine , also known as Journavx . He said it targets a pain-signaling pathway in the peripheral nervous system.

It works in a similar way to how an anti-depressant or anti-seizure medication works in the central nervous system. 'This is something in-between that can be applicable for a large number of patients,' said Dr. Cheng. Although this wouldn't stop the use of opioids altogether, he said it's a strong alternative when appropriate. 'Maybe not as good as a strong opioid, but it does bridge the gap between no opioid, a weak opioid, and strong opioids,' he said
