The US Food and Drug Administration has approved an injectable diabetes drug for long-term weight control.
"This under-the-skin injection is the first approved drug for chronic weight management in adults with general obesity or overweight since 2014," the FDA said in a statement Friday.Studies have shown the once-a-week injection, called semaglutide, can help people lose up to 12% of their body weight over about a year and a half.
"Losing 5% to 10% of body weight through diet and exercise has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in adult patients with obesity or overweight."Fat-shaming by doctors, family, classmates is a global health problem, studies findPeople without diabetes who took the drug lost an average of 12.4% of their initial body weight over 16 months, compared to those given a placebo. Diabetes patients who tested the drug lost 6.
