The FCC's extra funding should help improve connectivity for telehealth platforms in rural areas, so patients can tap into accessible and affordable care
to the surge in demand for stronger telehealth infrastructure by padding its Rural Health Care Program with an extra $198 million in funding, putting total funding for the program at a record $802.7 million for 2020, per MedCityNews. The agency plans to dole out the funds to rural healthcare centers to increase access to broadband services and telecommunications, and will distribute the additional $198 million in aid from a pool of unused funding from the past few years.
This lack of broadband infrastructure can substantially affect hospitals' ability to reach patients via telehealth consultations and transmit health information — so, it makes sense that the newly allocated funds would focus on improving access to tech infrastructure in rural parts of the US.
This move, along with the FCC's additional funding to improve rural telehealth infrastructure, could signal to massive telehealth vendors that rural health centers will be better equipped than before to take on new telehealth partnerships. Telehealth firm Amwell — which to go public last month amid surging patient volumes — has already tested the waters with rural healthcare tie-ups. with UVA Health System, which serves the coalfields of Southwestern Virginia — a substantially medically underserved population — to provide specialty care.
