The agency has requested in-depth information about last month’s network failure that left millions without cellphone service for hours.
The Federal Communications Commission has opened a formal investigation into last month’s nationwide AT&T outage that left millions of people without cellphone serviceThe outage left many AT&T customers without cellphone service for much of the morning and early afternoon on Feb. 22, with outage reports starting around 3:30 a.m. Eastern time and resolving by 3 p.m. that afternoon.
While the FCC had previously said it was looking into the issue, opening a formal investigation marks a significant step in continuing federal scrutiny over the incident.
AT&T on Thursday reiterated its previous apology for the incident and said it is providing credits to customers who were “most impacted” by the outage. “The industry routinely cooperates with our key regulators in the aftermath of serious outages to evaluate how network resiliency and reliability can be improved,” AT&T spokesman Jim Greer said in an email to The Washington Post. “We are already working with the FCC on its review.”It remains unclear why the network outage persisted for so long. The company has not said how many of its roughly 71 million postpaid wireless customers were affected. An estimated 1.
Several government agencies have looked into the incident or continue to do so, including the FBI, Department of Homeland Security and New York’s attorney general.
