When the 2021/22 season ended, Xavi Hernandez's side were said to still be in a state of serious financial difficulty, with the club, among other things, understood to owe stalwart Gerard Pique £42.5 million in deferred wages.Although the Blaugrana are also trying to sell Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United, it is claimed they owe the midfielder at least £17 million in unpaid wages, a result of a salary deferral he agreed to during the COVID pandemic in 2020.

However, this has not stopped the Spanish giants from securing transfer deals, having kicked off their window with the acquisition of free-agent duo Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen, before agreeing to sign Raphinha from Leeds United for a hefty fee. It must be noted, though, that the club has not yet able to register Kessie and Christensen as they are still well over LaLiga's wage cap.
