Millions of Americans could be affected by peer-to-peer payment app schemes, the bureau says.
It was just a regular day for Sara, a 23-year-old living in North Carolina, when an unknown number called her phone in January.The number matched the area code where she had recently lived. Since Sara, who asked to be referred to by an alias, was waiting to hear back from her apartment about damages from a burst pipe, she immediately responded.What happened next was a nightmare and a lesson to those who think they can easily avoid scammers.
'Although P2P payment services can be easy to set up, simple to use, and are generally secure, it's important to be aware that criminals may try to scam you into sending money,' the FBI said in a warning this week.While it was previously thought seniors were most at risk of losing their money in digital scams, people aged 18 to 24 are losing more of their money to these schemes, a new report from the Better Business Bureau's Institute for Marketplace Trust found.
