The FBI was conducting a manhunt on Monday for a lone gunman suspected of fatally shooting the 20-year-old son of a federal judge in New Jersey and wounding her husband, a prominent defense attorney who remained in critical condition.

U.S. District Judge Esther Salas was home at the time of the shooting in North Brunswick, New Jersey, but was in the basement and was not injured, according to media reports and Marion Costanza, a friend of the family who lives three homes away.

Investigators have preliminary information that someone dressed as a FedEx driver arrived at the family home in North Brunswick at about 5 p.m. , ABC News reported on Sunday, citing multiple law enforcement sources. Salas, 51, was nominated to her seat by then-President Barack Obama in 2010, becoming the first Hispanic woman to serve on the District Court of New Jersey. Salas could not be immediately reached for comment.
