The FBI has apprehended Teresa Youngblut, accused of killing U.S. Border Patrol Agent David 'Chris' Maland during a traffic stop in Vermont. Youngblut faces federal charges, while her accomplice, Felix Baukholt, a German national, was killed during the exchange of gunfire.
The FBI announced the arrest of Teresa Youngblut, a 21-year-old resident of Washington state, in connection with the fatal shooting of U.S. Border Patrol Agent David 'Chris' Maland near the Vermont -Canada border. The incident occurred on Monday during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 between Newport and Orleans, Vermont . Youngblut is facing charges of assault on a federal law enforcement officer. She was taken into custody following the shooting. Maland, a 44-year-old Minnesota native and U.S.
Air Force veteran, was shot during the traffic stop. He served nine years in the military and 15 years in federal service, including as a K-9 handler and a Border Patrol agent in Texas. Maland's family expressed their grief and shared details about his dedicated service to the country. According to an FBI criminal complaint, the traffic stop was initiated on a blue 2015 Toyota Prius with North Carolina license plates. The registered owner, Felix Baukholt, a German national, reportedly had an expired visa. Youngblut was driving the vehicle with Baukholt as the passenger. During the stop, gunshots were reported, and both Youngblut and Baukholt allegedly brandished firearms. At least one Border Patrol agent fired at the suspects, fatally wounding Baukholt and Maland. Youngblut sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical attention in New Hampshire. Investigators discovered various items of tactical gear, ammunition, and electronic devices in the Prius, suggesting a potential planned attack. The FBI had been monitoring Baukholt and Youngblut since January 14th, 2025, following a report from a concerned citizen who observed them wearing tactical gear and carrying firearms at a hotel in Lyndonville, Vermont. Attempts to engage in conversation with the suspects were unsuccessful, and they claimed to be in the area to look at purchasing property. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation. It is unclear when Youngblut will make her first court appearance
