Washington — The Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI ) has apprehended a suspect believed to have been involved in the 2012 terrorist attack on a United States facility in Benghazi, Libya , an assault that resulted in the deaths of four Americans. Attorney General Pam Bondi made the announcement on Friday, stating that the FBI had successfully arrested one of the key individuals implicated in the Benghazi attack.
She emphasized that the pursuit of justice would continue, adding that the suspect could run, but could not hide. The suspect, identified as Zubayar al-Bakoush, was transferred to the United States overnight, according to Bondi. The announcement was made in conjunction with FBI Director Kash Patel and Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. attorney in Washington. The tragic events of September 11, 2012, claimed the lives of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, along with Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty. These individuals perished during an attack on a U.S. diplomatic compound and a nearby CIA outpost, carried out by militants affiliated with the Ansar al-Sharia group. Pirro confirmed that the surviving family members had been informed of al-Bakoush's capture prior to the public announcement, ensuring sensitivity and respect for their suffering. \Following the announcement of the arrest, prosecutors unveiled a 13-page indictment filed in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C. The indictment details seven counts against al-Bakoush, including charges of murder, attempted murder, providing material support to terrorists, and arson. Al-Bakoush is expected to appear in court later on Friday to address these serious accusations. The indictment asserts that al-Bakoush, a resident of Benghazi, was a member of the militant group Ansar al-Sharia. Prosecutors allege that he was among the armed militants who participated in the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, where Ambassador Stevens and his security team were located. The details presented in the indictment describe the assault, including how a group of approximately 20 militants breached the main gate, setting fire to buildings and resulting in the deaths of Stevens and Smith. Furthermore, the indictment alleges that al-Bakoush entered the compound after the fires were set and engaged in surveillance before attempting to gain access to vehicles on the premises. The attack's devastation extended to a CIA annex, located about a mile away from the U.S. mission, where a subsequent mortar attack claimed the lives of Woods and Doherty, who were CIA contractors. \Attorney General Bondi indicated that the collaborative efforts of the State Department, the CIA, and the FBI were instrumental in capturing al-Bakoush. In 2014, U.S. Special Forces captured Ahmed Abu Khatallah, a Libyan national purported to be a leader of the attack. Despite being acquitted of murder charges in 2017, he was convicted on other charges and initially sentenced to 22 years in prison. This sentence was later adjusted in 2024 to 28 years following a determination by a federal judge that the initial sentence was insufficient. Furthermore, in 2017, another Libyan, Mustafa al-Imam, was apprehended in a U.S. operation and brought to face charges. He was found guilty at trial in 2019 and received a 19-year prison sentence, thus highlighting the sustained effort to hold those accountable for this devastating act
