The BA.2 subvariant of the omicron variant of the coronavirus will probably cause an uptick in U.S. cases similar to the one currently occurring in Europe, Dr. Fauci said.

The BA.2 subvariant of the omicron variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 will probably cause an uptick in U.S. cases similar to the one currently occurring in Europe, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Cases are currently rising in Europe again after most countries relaxed all restrictions and the U.S. has typically lagged Europe’s case numbers by a few weeks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that children younger than 5 were hospitalized with COVID at far higher rates during the recent omicron-fueled surge than in earlier periods of the pandemic.
