Dr. Anthony Fauci warns that “things are going to get worse” as the Delta variant spreads and COVID cases increase in the coming months, particularly among unvaccinated people.
“I don’t think we’re going to see lockdowns,” he said on ABC News’s“I think we have [vaccinated] enough of the percentage of people in the country, not enough to crush the outbreak, but I believe enough to not allow us to get into the situation we were in last winter,” he said.
But, he warned, “things are going to get worse” as the Delta variant spreads and cases of COVID-19 increase during the coming months, particularly among unvaccinated people. “We’re looking not, I believe, to lockdown, but we’re looking to some pain and suffering in the future because we’re seeing the cases go up,” he said.
“From the standpoint of illness, hospitalization, suffering, and death, the unvaccinated are much more vulnerable,” Fauci said. “When you look at the country as a whole in getting us back to normal, the unvaccinated -- by not being vaccinated -- are allowing the propagation and the spread of theAs Delta variant cases increase, the CDC has recommended that everyone wear masks indoors in areas where transmission is high, including fully vaccinated people.
“The fact is if you get infected, even if you are without symptoms, you very well may infect another person who may be vulnerable, who may get seriously ill,” he said.
