Fatima Payman has vowed to defy the party line again to express backing for Palestine; Richard Marles says the future of AUKUS will be unaffected by the outcome of the US presidential election. Follow updates here.
Rogue Labor senator Fatima Payman has vowed to defy the party line again to express backing for Palestine, despite the outrage her earlier decision to cross the floor and back a Greens motion caused among colleagues. But Payman, a rookie MP from Western Australia, insisted she did not intend to leave the Labor Party, although she implied federal caucus MPs were out of step with rank-and-file members.
A defiant Payman, a young Muslim woman who fled Afghanistan, said she supported a two-state solution but if another motion was put forward to recognise Palestinian statehood, she would vote for it. “I respect the prime minister and my senior colleagues, and obviously the prime minister had a stern-but-fair conversation with me a few days ago,” she said.
