A suspect was shot and killed by two Austin police officers Saturday morning near the YMCA in Downtown Austin following reports of an armed man on a scooter. The incident began with multiple 911 calls about a white male with a handgun in the area. Officers located the suspect, who fled on foot and was seen with a firearm. After refusing commands to stop and drop the weapon, officers fired their weapons. The suspect died at the scene despite medical aid. Investigations are ongoing with police oversight and the district attorney's office.
One person is dead after a shooting involving two Austin police officers occurred Saturday near the YMCA in Downtown Austin. Shortly after 8 a.m., police began to receive several 911 calls regarding a white male armed with a handgun in the downtown area near the trail system around Lamar and Cesar Chavez.
Shortly after 11 a.m., officers made contact with an individual matching the previous description. The officers approached the individual, who was on a scooter. Officers attempted to make contact and detain the suspect to ask him about the earlier reported incidents. The suspect left the scooter and fled the officers on foot.
The officers gave several commands for the suspect to stop. During the short foot chase in which the officers continued to give demands, the suspect was seen to be in possession of a firearm. The suspect refused to stop or drop the firearm, despite being given several commands to do so. The officers caught up to the individual, where they fired more than one round and struck the suspect.
Medical aid was provided, but the suspect was pronounced deceased on the scene. An investigation is occurring with Austin Police Oversight and APD special investigations unit, as well as the Travis County District Attorney's office. No identifying information has been released about the suspect. Officer said more information and video will be released in the coming days
