A fatal moped crash in Washington, D.C., is under investigation by the Metropolitan Police Department. The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 23, 2020, involved a collision between a Revel Electric Moped and a passenger vehicle. The moped operator was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Witnesses allege that officers chased the moped operator for riding without a helmet and caused the collision by hitting the back tire of the moped. The family of the deceased is demanding answers and justice, alleging police misconduct and a lack of transparency.

Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Friday, October 23, 2020, at approximately 10:09 PM. MPD officers observed a person operating a Revel Electric Moped without a helmet on the sidewalk in the 500 block of Kennedy Street, NW. Officers activated their emergency lights and attempted to make a traffic stop.

When the moped exited an alley in the 700 block of Kennedy Street, NW, it collided with a passenger vehicle traveling on Kennedy Street. Officers provided first aid until DC Fire and EMS transported the moped operator to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Anyone with knowledge of this incident is asked to call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information can be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by sending a text message to 50411.A witness account alleges that the incident began with officers chasing the moped operator for riding without a helmet. The witness claims the operator pulled over, inquiring about the reason for the chase, and officers replied that it was due to the lack of a helmet. Despite this, the officers allegedly continued the pursuit, hitting the back tire of the moped and causing the operator to fall. The witness questions why the officers would resort to such force over a helmet violation.Furthermore, the witness states that the operator was initially checked into the hospital as John Doe despite officers knowing his name. The witness also alleges that the officers harassed the operator in the past and pulled the plug on life support without consent, even after being told no. The witness expresses frustration that body camera footage or any official statement regarding the incident has not been released, despite it being over 48 hours since the event. The family is demanding answers and seeking justice for Karon Hylton
